Comedians to give free performance

by Paula M. Davenport

CARBONDALE, Ill. - - A pair of lovable comedians who've mastered the arts of mime, juggling and slapstick will give a free, upcoming performance at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Their show, "How Many Clowns Can You Fit in a Volkswagen?" is ideal for the whole family and will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at McLeod Theater, southeast wing of the Communications Building.

The Detroit-based actors are visiting the SIUC Theater Department, where they're teaching their comedic skills to young actors who'll stage a separate public production later in the fall."Rick Carver and Karen Sheridan combine their abilities for a delightful drive down havoc highway . . . where (the zany characters they've created) clash in a series of comic sketches," according to their press release.

Carver is an avid juggler, stilt dancer, mime, improvisational actor and a magician who frequently performs on stage and at Renaissance festivals.

Sheridan is an actress and movement artist who studied mime in Paris and taught for six years at Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey's Clown College.

Expanding cultural outreach efforts is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint for the development of the University by the time it celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2019.
