Bridge replacement project set for Saturday

by Tom Woolf

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Installation of a new pedestrian bridge on Saturday, Aug. 7, will necessitate the closing of part of Douglas Drive on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus.

Crews using a crane will remove the existing bridge at campus lake and install the new one, beginning at about 7 a.m. Douglas Drive should reopen late in the afternoon.

The street will be closed from just west of Evergreen Drive to the entrance to Stone Center. That area is west of the parking lot at the Arena, site of Saturday's 9:30 a.m. summer commencement ceremony, and the project will not affect access to the Arena lot from U.S. Route 51 or from the Pleasant Hill Road entrance just west of U.S. Route 51.
