With a torch borrowed from Special Olympics, youngsters at Camp Little Giant -- a residential summer program for kids and adults with disabilities -- will carry the symbolic flame over the wooded grounds at Touch of Nature Outdoor Environmental Center to celebrate this summer's games in Greece.
Starting at about 2 p.m. Monday, July 12, some 55 campers and 30 counselors will line up at the camp's entrance off Giant City Road, about seven miles south of Carbondale.
From the camp's entrance, they'll pass the torch from one camper to the next until the flame reaches the camp's fire pit, where it will ignite a bonfire that will burn throughout the rest of the week.
Reporters and photographers are welcome to cover the event.
Acting camp director Amanda J. Young will be on the grounds for interviews and to talk about the torch passing and the camp's rich history as a therapeutic facility.
