SIUC sponsoring Challenge to Excellence camps

by Yolanda Shelton

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A respected summer camp for young brainiacs -- sponsored by Southern Illinois University Carbondale -- promises to expand thinking skills of academically gifted students in grades seven through 11.

Admission is on a competitive basis and is highly selective.

SIUC's Challenge to Excellence camp will meet for two separate sessions.

Session one will run June 13-18 and is intended for seventh and eighth-graders. Session two is set for June 20-27 and is geared for those in grades nine through 11.

The program's goal is to promote higher-level thinking skills in a variety of academic subjects. Sessions will be taught by instructors who have years of experience teaching gifted students and are supervised by counselors who are experienced teachers or SIUC graduate students.

Cost for campers to spend the entire week in residence is $295, which includes room and board, most instructional supplies and a T-shirt. The commuter fee is $225 and includes everything but overnight accommodations.
