CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees awarded bids for the new Student Health Programs Facility and the temporary Library Storage Facility at its regular monthly meeting in Carbondale today (May 13).

Bids for the health programs addition to the Student Recreation Center came in more than $1 million below the original estimate of $9.62 million. Trustees awarded the contract for general construction to Zeller Construction Inc. of Marion for $5,591,000. Subcontract winners were:

  • Plumbing, Litton Enterprises Inc., $409,275;

  • Fire protection systems, Western Kentucky Sprinkler Co. Inc., of Paducah, Ky., for $121,300;

  • Heating work, Southern Illinois Piping Contractors Inc., of Carbondale, $481,300;

  • Ventilation work, Quality Sheet Metal Inc., of Carbondale, $502,316; and

  • Electrical work, Clinton Electric Inc, of Ina (Ill.), $1,308,254.

Work on the facility will begin this summer.

Bids for the Library Storage Facility also came in well below project estimates. The facility, which will be built near the SIU Press on McLafferty Road in Carbondale, will provide temporary storage during the extensive remodeling of Morris Library scheduled to begin this fall.

J & L Robinson Inc. of Carbondale won the contract with the low bid of $1,720,312. Initial estimates had placed the cost at $3.5 million.

Workers should finish the storage building later this summer.
