by K.C. Jaehnig

CARBONDALE, Ill. - - A free, public reading to benefit Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Young Writers Workshop will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, May 24, at the Longbranch Coffeehouse, 100 E. Jackson St. in Carbondale.

The event will feature original prose and poetry by Curtis L. Crisler, Barb Eidlin, Allison Joseph, Deb Jurmu, Kevin McKelvey, Michael Meyerhofer, Chad Parmenter and Jamie Walzcak, all from the University's creative writing program, and five raffles of various book packages. Proceeds from raffle ticket and T-shirt sales will go toward scholarships to the annual workshop, a four-day program aimed at developing the writing talents of area high school students.

Cash is welcome, too. Tax-deductible scholarships range in value from $25 to $220. Send program and scholarship checks, payable to SIUC and designated for the Young Writers Workshop in the check memo line, to Pat Eckert at SIUC's Division of Continuing Education, Washington Square C, Carbondale, IL 62901.
