Six schools win Foreign Language Day trophies

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- High school teams from CarbondaleCollinsvilleHerrinRed BudSparta and Waterloo took home first-place trophies won during Southern Illinois University Carbondale's annual Foreign Language Day Scholar Bowl April 1.

Some 38 schools from around the region fielded teams for the event, translating, interpreting and answering questions about other cultures where French, German, Latin and Spanish are mother tongues.

Teams competed in two classes: Division A for students with one or two years of foreign-language classes and Division B for those with three or four years. Because so many students study Spanish, each division in that language has two leagues. Here are the winners, listed by language and division.

French, Division A: First place, Herrin High School; second place, Collinsville High School

French, Division B: First place, Carbondale Community High School; second place, Collinsville High School

Latin, Division A: First place, Sparta High School; second place, Collinsville High School

Latin, Division B: First place, Sparta High School; second place, Collinsville High School

German, Division A: First place, Waterloo High School; second place, (Farina) South Central High School

German, Division B: First place, Collinsville High School; second place, Waterloo High School

Spanish, Division A1: First place, Waterloo High School; second place, Teutopolis High School

Spanish, Division B1: First place, Waterloo High School; second place, Effingham High School

Spanish, Division A2: First place, Red Bud High School; second place, Carterville High School

Spanish, Division B2: First place, Red Bud High School; second place, Marion High School
