SIUC news events for Feb. 9-15

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- News directors, editors and reporters covering Southern Illinois University Carbondale: To facilitate your planning for next week, here's a listing of events and activities scheduled on campus or that are University-related. We will provide these listings each Friday and are happy to help you arrange coverage.

Monday, Feb. 9

 

  • Tenor William Brown, who has performed with major symphonies in the U.S. and abroad, presents a spirituals workshop at 3:30 p.m. in the Old Baptist Foundation Chapel. Part of Black History Month activities.

  • Visiting Artist Presentation, 7 p.m., Parkinson Laboratory's Browne Auditorium. Internationally acclaimed African-African artist Al Loving will talk about his craft. Immediately following his lecture, he'll greet visitors at an opening reception for his one-man show "Formal Continuity: Works by Al Loving" at the University Museum. Part of Black History Month activities.

  • International Film Series presents "City of Hope," introduced by actor Jon Farris, who has a small role in the film, 7 p.m., Life Science III Auditorium.

  • Lecture by David Yepsen, a political columnist for the Des Moines Register; 7:30 p.m., law school auditorium. Yepsen will present this year's John White Fellowship Lecture.
Tuesday, Feb. 10

 

  • "Uncovering Illinois' Past: The Controversy of the Old Slave House," noon-1 p.m., Student Center Ohio Room. Kevin M. Foster, an assistant professor in the departments of anthropology and Black American Studies, explores the history of the Old Slave House in Equality. Part of Black History Month activities.
  •  

  • Panel discussion, "Aesthetic Experience: Artist, Dealer, and Educator," University Museum's Auditorium, 10 a.m. Panelists will include African-American artist Al Loving, Chicago gallery director Jumaane N'Namdi, and SIUC assistant professor of art and design Najjar Abdul-Musawwir. Part of Black History Month activities.

  • Tenney lecture, 8 p.m., Student Center Auditorium. Actor/director Jon Farris will talk about acting on the American stage.

Thursday, Feb. 12

 

  • Vincent Tinto discusses "Understanding Student Departure and Student Success," 4-5:30 p.m., Student Center Auditorium. Tinto is distinguished university professor and chair of the higher education program in Syracuse University's School of Education.

Friday, Feb. 13

 

  • Vincent Tinto discusses "Building a Learning Community" with faculty from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Student Center Mississippi Room. From 1 to 2 p.m., Tinto will discuss "Out-of-Class Communities" with administrative/professional staff in Trueblood Hall's Eastmore Room. This is an informal discussion about the impact of extracurricular programs and activities on student success and retention.
  •  

  • Sixth annual Accounting Challenge, with more than 140 juniors and seniors from more than 13 high schools competing for scholarships. Team competition runs from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Student Recreation Center.
