SIU’s summer camps offer fun for all ages

Events and Outreach is coordinating a wide array of diverse summer camps and programs that cater to many interests and varied abilities and will intrigue, entertain, educate and engage all ages.


Active threat exercises set for April 24 to improve emergency response

The Emergency Operations Center will hold active threat exercises from 8 a.m. to noon April 24 to see how its teams work together in responding to an emergency and to analyze strengths and areas for improvement.


Mark your calendar: Southern Illinois Crossroads Eclipse Festival is April 5-8 

To celebrate the 2024 eclipse, the university will have four days of festivities, including a research workshop, concert, Eclipse Con, a science and technology expo, and arts and crafts fair. The fun starts on April 5 and culminates with Eclipse Day at Saluki Stadium on April 8.


Promotion, tenure workshops scheduled for next week 

The Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Administration will host a series of workshops Wednesday and Thursday, March 27-28.


March Madness can have pros and cons for businesses, SIU prof says 

Cheering on your favorite team during March Madness can produce a lot of fun and camaraderie but also prove costly to businesses as a result of lost work time and productivity, says Steve Karau, an assistant professor of management who has studied cyberloafing.


Rock & Mineral Clinic is today

Learn more about the rocks and minerals that make up the planet at the Rock & Mineral Clinic from 3-6 p.m. today (March 21) in Room 101F in the Parkinson Building. Daniel Hummer, associate professor of geology, will provide expert oversight, and the Geology Club will host the program.


Lab coats available for faculty researchers 

Faculty and university researchers are reminded that lab coats are available to check out at no cost through the university’s Clean Lab Coat Initiative. Funded through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate School Dean, the recently initiated program facilitates lab coat hygiene through providing, laundering and repairing lab coats at no charge to faculty and staff of research labs. Available in a variety of unisex sizes, the coats may be checked out through the LAP office in Life Science III, Room 1062. All invited to SIU’s Holi festival on Monday 

Holi, India’s traditional Hindu spring festival, will be celebrated beginning at 2 p.m. Monday, March 25, in Morris Library. The festivities will feature guest speakers and more.


The Big Event: A Saluki Day of Service, is Friday 

Hundreds of SIU Carbondale students will assist with community service projects at locations throughout Jackson County as part of the university’s largest one day service event on Friday, March 22.


SIU hosts intermedia artist Meredith Tromble on Thursday 

Intermedia artist and writer Meredith Tromble will present a free, public lecture and performance at 7 p.m. today (March 21) in the Sharp Museum Auditorium. Tromble’s exhibition, “What Does It Mean to Know,” is in the museum’s Saluki Gallery through May 10. A reception is from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the museum.


Be maroon from head to toe 

Ken Anderson, director, Advanced Energy Institute, shows that Saluki maroon comes in many different styles, including caps and a windbreaker. This week, the Saluki baseball team hosts Valparaiso for three games at Itchy Jones Stadium Friday through Sunday, March 22-24, and UT-Martin on Tuesday, March 26. MEDPREP students collect 13K hygiene products for women in corrections 

SIU MEDPREP students collected and delivered more than 13,000 feminine hygiene products to Springfield on March 19 for women housed in the Illinois Department of Corrections.


Reminder: CARP registration deadline is March 28 

Faculty are reminded that the deadline for students to register for the April 11 Creative Activities and Research Presentations (CARP) is Thursday, March 28. Any student who worked under the guidance of a faculty mentor can display and present their project.


Reminder: Provost Faculty Fellow program applications due April 1 

The deadline for tenured SIU Carbondale faculty to participate in the Provost Faculty Fellow program for the fall 2024 semester with possible renewal in spring 2025 is April 1.
