SIU plans four days of science, fun-filled events to celebrate 2024 eclipse 

SIU Carbondale will once more be the epicenter – the crossroads – for a total solar eclipse that will traverse much of the country on Monday, April 8. And just like the last time this happened – seven years ago, in 2017 – the university has an amazing slate of family-friendly, fun and science planned, along with its partner, NASA.


Learn about office hours on Eclipse Day, getting special glasses 

Classes on Eclipse Day (Monday, April 8) will be canceled, but the university will be open. Students will not be in class that day and are encouraged to participate in the exciting events and activities on campus. All offices will be open throughout the day but may close for a period during the afternoon so everyone can experience totality.  


Salukis take over St. Louis 

The Saluki Takeover Tour: St. Louis is underway through Saturday, March 9. SIU officials are meeting with alumni, forging and strengthening connections in the area and cheering on the men’s basketball Salukis as they compete in Arch Madness.


Students can register now for Creative Activities and Research Presentations 

Registration is now open for the Creative Activities and Research Presentations (CARP), set for Thursday, April 11, at the Student Center on the second floor Art Gallery. Students are invited to display a poster explaining their project.


Advertising student Mea Roedell earns prestigious internship

Journalism major Mea Roedell was selected to participate in the 2024 Vance and Betty Lee Stickell Student Internship Program — just the third SIU student chosen for the internship, which dates to 1989.


Maple Syrup Festival is March 23-24 

A mouth-watering, long-standing Southern Illinois tradition returns to the Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center March 23-24. The popular annual Maple Syrup Festival is open to the public and runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.


Emeritus professor chronicles SIU School of Law’s 50-year history  

Frank G. Houdek has been affiliated with the SIU School of Law for nearly 80% of a storied history that is now in its 51st year. In piecing together “Celebrating the First Fifty Years of Southern Illinois University School of Law,” Houdek said the work provided perspective.


It’s a great time to wear maroon

There will be plenty of opportunities to don Saluki maroon during the next two weeks just like Mark Owens, director, facilities and energy management. The men’s basketball team has a first-round game against University of Illinois Chicago in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at 8:30 p.m. today (March 7) in the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. The Saluki women’s softball team hosts the Coach B Classic, Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10, at Charlotte West Stadium against Loyola University Chicago and Green Bay and will play at home March 15-16 against Drake. The men’s baseball team hosts Houston Christian for three games at Itchy Jones Stadium today through Saturday and then Jacksonville State March 15-17. The men’s swimming and diving team hosts the 2024 Mid-American Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Student Recreation Center’s Shea Natatorium through Sunday. SIU to host high school digital drafting and design competition

About 50 students from four area high schools who have an interest in architecture, construction and interior design will be on campus Friday, March 8, for the Illinois Design Educators Association regional competition.


View this month’s ‘Saluki Watch Dawg’ 

The Department of Public Safety’s March 2024 issue of the “Saluki Watch Dawg” is available. This month’s edition includes tips about income tax and spring break, reminders about available mental health resources on campus and information on the April 8 total solar eclipse.


Reminder: Nomination deadline for SIU System ADEI award is March 15 

The nomination deadline for the Dr. Wesley G. Robinson-McNeese ADEI Lifetime Achievement Award is March 15.   


Reminder: Distinguished student service award nominations due March 18 

Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate a deserving student for an SIU Student Distinguished Service Award by the SIU Board of Trustees. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. March 18. 


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday  

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, along with guests will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, March 10. NAJ was formed in 1984 among several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. The performance will feature works by Dave Brubeck, Dan Haerle, Jeff Lorber, New Cool Collective, Ben Tankard and Dan Willis.


SIU Today spring break schedule 

SIU Today will also take a spring break next week and resume on March 18. The submission deadline for that edition is Thursday, March 14.
