Researchers work to place Southern Illinois Black heritage sites on National Register 

Work led by Mark Wagner, a professor in the Center for Archaeological Investigations and anthropology department, to recognize significant Black heritage properties in the region could also reveal more information about a Union Army military camp that hosted up to 5,000 freed Blacks in Cairo at one point during the Civil War. The project is being supported by a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.


SIU recognizing Black History Month as a time of ancestral healing 

SIU Carbondale will celebrate Black History Month in February with a variety of special events including guest speakers, a variety show, a book drive, an oratorical contest, an awards ceremony and much more


Talk to focus on making eclipse documentary ‘In the Shadow’  

Two SIU Carbondale filmmakers will discuss their efforts to document the 2017 total solar eclipse during the next “Journey to the Eclipse” talk set for 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2.


SIU is sponsoring job fair Feb. 20

The Career Development Center is hosting a job and internship fair next month, and SIU campus departments, colleges, schools or units that are seeking interns can participate at no cost.


SIU has space available for researchers, photographers observing April eclipse

Amateur and professional researchers and astrophotographers who need observation space and facilities for the upcoming April 8 total solar eclipse can apply for assistance from the SIU Space Science group. The deadline to submit research proposal abstracts is no later than Wednesday, Jan. 31.


SIU’s Love at First Onsight is Feb. 10

Registration is underway for Love at First Onsight, an annual Valentine-themed climbing competition on Feb. 10 at the Student Recreation Center. The event is open to anyone 16 or older, of any skill level.


Trademark Boot Camp coming to SIU on Feb. 8  

The Trademark Boot Camp, a no-cost workshop at SIU Carbondale’s Center for Innovation will provide entrepreneurs, small businesses, inventors and others with valuable information about trademarks and why they matter. The workshop is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 8. 


Reminder: Submit nominations for Diversity Champion Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for the Diversity Champion Awards, presented annually to members of the SIU community who exemplify anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion through community engagement, programming, creation of best practices and initiatives, implementation of policies and procedures, training and mentoring. All nominations must be submitted online by Feb. 29.


Reminder: SIU staff virtual wellness session is Feb. 5 

The SIU System will offer a wellness session for staff only on Feb. 5. The session will focus on understanding how your unique roles play into SIU’s mission-driven purpose and how to work together to achieve those goals and vision of an inclusive culture.
