Commencement weekend starts Friday

The university will celebrate the accomplishments of more than 1,800 graduates on Friday and Saturday with the SIU School of Law ceremony on Friday in Shryock Auditorium and two commencement exercises on Saturday at Banterra Center.


Veteran HR professional to join SIU leadership team

Nick Wortman, who has more than 10 years of experience in higher education human resources, will become the university’s assistant vice chancellor of human resources, effective June 12.


Jacari Henderson is SIU’s new Saluki Cares director  

Jacari Henderson, an SIU double alumna, is the new director of Saluki Cares, the university’s campuswide student support and care effort. 


SIU employees get special offer for Sam Hunt concert 

SIU Carbondale employees can get a special discount when they buy tickets to see country music star Sam Hunt perform on Aug. 3 at Banterra Center.


On-campus Benefits Choice Fair is Tuesday

With the deadline for the State Employees Group Insurance Program Benefit Choice open enrollment for all eligible employees at the end of the month, employees are reminded of an on-campus Benefits Choice Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, in the Student Center. CMS staff, benefits vendors, employee benefits staff and health screenings will be available in various locations. Presentations will be given by Central Management Services at 10 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. in Ballroom B. The open enrollment deadline is May 31.


Nontraditional auto tech major grateful for SIU’s support

Angelina Lopez, an automotive technology major from Homewood, Illinois, who graduates from SIU Carbondale on Saturday, credits the university’s supportive environment in making her entry into the traditionally male-dominated world of automotive technology seamless and natural.


Paul Simon Institute to host virtual discussion with ‘trailblazing’ Peoria mayor

Rita Ali, the first woman and first Black mayor to lead Peoria, Illinois, is the next guest in the virtual Meet the Mayor series hosted by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at noon Friday, May 12.


School of Art and Design hosts senior exhibition

The SIU community is invited to view the creative work of 16 School of Art and Design undergraduate students during an exhibition this week at the Surplus Gallery, located in the Glove Factory building, 432 S. Washington St., Carbondale. The exhibition is open from noon to 4 p.m. through Friday, May 12. A public reception is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, following commencement ceremonies.


Be sure to wear maroon this weekend

With commencement activities on Friday and Saturday, the campus will be awash in maroon. Saluki fans also have the chance to support the women’s softball team as SIU hosts the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, which is underway through Saturday, May 13, at Charlotte West Stadium. The Saluki men’s baseball team closes out its home schedule with Missouri State, Friday through Sunday, at Itchy Jones Stadium. Saluki Athletics introduces PawPass ticket-subscription plan

Saluki fans have a brand-new, low-cost option to experience all of the home games during the upcoming 2023-24 season — PawPass.


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday 

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, along with guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 14. NAJ was formed in 1984 among several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. Learn more about NAJ.


SIU Today begins summer schedule next week

After the spring semester ends on Saturday, May 13, SIU Today will begin its summer schedule and come out once a week, each Thursday, beginning May 18. For the summer schedule, the submission deadline will be 4:30 p.m. the Tuesday before publication.
