SIU creates new, faster pathway to teaching to address shortage

Eight SIU students are currently working in classrooms throughout the region for the inaugural year of the Saluki Teacher Residency Partnership. SIU is one of just five universities statewide chosen for the $250,000 Teacher Residency Grant from the Illinois State Board of Education, which provides financial, mentorship and experiential benefits to teacher candidates while also helping participating school districts and children. The program addresses the teacher shortage, and it gets the aspiring educators started on their careers several months earlier.


700+ students coming SIU on Wednesday to see academics in action

About 700 students from 16 area high schools will meet faculty and staff to get a closer look at resources and academic programs at SIU Carbondale on Wednesday, Sept. 14. The event starts at 10 a.m. in the Student Center.


Virtual appointments available for Sept. 27 faculty, staff regalia sale 

University Events and Protocol is announcing a virtual faculty and staff regalia sale through Herff Jones, a national provider of custom regalia. Graduate students wishing to purchase regalia rather than rent are also welcome.


Research compliance guidance is available 

The Office of Vice Chancellor for Research and the Office of Research Compliance are providing guidance and essential resources for faculty and staff engaged in research activities.


‘The Rescue’ documentary screening is Thursday 

A 2021 National Geographic documentary based on the rescue of 12 young soccer players and their coach trapped in a remote underwater cave in Thailand for 18 days in June 2018 will be shown at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, in the SIU School of Law Auditorium. Snacks will be provided.


SIU to host hemp and cannabis symposium Saturday 

The third Southern Illinois Hemp/Cannabis Symposium is Saturday, Sept. 17, at the SIU Student Center. The event is sponsored by SIU’s Cannabis Science Center, whose mission includes formally establishing a collaborative network for cannabis research.


Free tickets for Mountainfilm on Tour, coming to Carbondale courtesy of SIU 

The university is bringing “Mountainfilm on Tour,” a selection of culturally rich, adventure-packed, inspiring documentary films to Carbondale on Sept. 30. Everyone is welcome to attend the free 7 p.m. showing at the Varsity Center, 418 S. Illinois Ave. SIU’s Recreational Sports and Services is hosting the presentation, with the doors opening at 6 p.m.  Pick up tickets in advance at no cost in the administration office on the first floor of the campus Student Recreation Center.


Family Eco Festival set for Sept. 24 

An SIU-affiliated family event aimed at helping science teachers across the region is set for later this month at a local winery.
