Saluki Takeover Tour stretches across Southern Illinois

The Saluki Takeover Tour of Southern Illinois is coming to a town near you. After successful events in Chicago, St. Louis, Springfield (Illinois), Florida and Nashville (Tennessee), the Saluki Takeover Tour will visit all 17 of the region’s counties from Wednesday, April 24, through May 4. Chancellor Austin Lane will host the keystone event, Southern Illinois Celebration, from 6 to 8 p.m. May 4, at Walker’s Bluff Casino Resort.


Reminder: University to hold active threat exercises April 24 

The Emergency Operations Center will hold active threat exercises from 8 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, April 24, to see how its teams work together in responding to an emergency and to analyze strengths and areas for improvement. The campus community may notice increased activity at the Student Center and more messaging via email and text from the university. 


Faculty, staff sought for May 11 commencement volunteers

Volunteer opportunities are available for faculty, staff and members of the community who would like to assist graduating Salukis as they celebrate their accomplishments during SIU Carbondale’s commencement exercises at Banterra Center on May 11.


HR new employee onboarding is delayed  

Human Resources’ new employee onboarding platform for both employees and hiring managers scheduled for May 1 is being delayed as is a live online April 29 training session for hiring managers. Hiring managers and anyone involved in the hiring process should continue to onboard new university hires as is presently being done. 


Three SIU seniors share 2024 Rickert-Ziebold art award 

Three graduating seniors in the School of Art and Design are sharing the university’s most prestigious art prize — the Rickert-Ziebold Trust Award. The exhibition runs through Saturday, April 20, in the SIU Surplus Gallery.  


School of Aviation names new director

Chien-tsung Lu, an associate professor in the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University, will be the new director in the SIU School of Aviation. The appointment is effective July 1.


Simmons Law School hosts naturalization ceremony Friday 

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois will host a naturalization ceremony for about 60 of the nation’s newest citizens at 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, at the SIU Simmons Law School. U.S. Senior District Judge J. Phil Gilbert will preside over the ceremony in the Lesar Law Building Auditorium, Room 120.


Book, Jacket, and Journal Show comes to SIU starting Friday

Morris Library will host an Association of University Presses Book, Jacket, and Journal Show, beginning Friday, April 19, through April 26. The material will be on display in the library’s Hall of Presidents and Chancellors.


Faculty, staff eligible for youth summer soccer camp discounts

SIU Women’s Soccer is offering a special discount for upcoming camps for children of SIU Carbondale faculty and staff. The two available discounted youth camps for boys and girls ages 6-14 will be June 10-13 and July 15-18.


Softball Salukis at home this weekend  

Michelle Odem, an office support assistant in Undergraduate Admissions, is showing her Saluki pride. The Saluki softball team hosts Belmont University for three games Friday through Sunday, April 19-21, and Missouri State University at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 24. Also, the annual Saluki football spring game begins at noon Saturday. Admission is free. Be sure to check team schedules at siusalukis.com.
