SIU experts search abandoned coal mines for rare earth elements used in green energy

Jia Liu, associate professor in the School of Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering, is using a U.S. Department of Interior grant to develop ways to salvage rare earth elements from abandoned coal mine drainages in hopes of developing an economical and environmentally friendly way to separate these elements from a waste product left behind by the area’s once-thriving coal production industry.


SIU awards full-ride scholarships to 37 high achieving students

The academic excellence of 37 high achieving high school seniors – including 16 students from the Southern Illinois region – received 2024 Chancellor’s Scholarships on Feb. 5. The scholarships cover tuition, mandatory fees, on-campus housing and food for four years.

Password-less login option is coming this spring 

This spring, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) is transitioning the campus community from Duo, SIU Carbondale’s current multi-factor authentication tool, to Microsoft Authenticator. Once Authenticator is set up, faculty, staff and students will have the option to access university systems in a streamlined manner, without entering a password.

Students from all over region win scholarships, prizes at SIU’s Accounting Challenge

Hundreds of high school students showed their accounting expertise and problem-solving skills as they competed for college scholarships, trophies and other prizes at the School of Accountancy’s 26th annual Accounting Challenge on Feb. 2.


SIU and Carbondale Fire Department offering Badd Axe Ladies job shadowing program 

The SIU Public Health program and the Carbondale Fire Department are again partnering to offer SIU female students a job shadowing opportunity with the fire department in March.


Reminder: Submit nominations for Diversity Champion Awards 

Nominations are now being accepted for the Diversity Champion Awards, presented annually to members of the SIU community who exemplify anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion through community engagement, programming, creation of best practices and initiatives, implementation of policies and procedures, training and mentoring. All nominations must be submitted online by Feb. 29.


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday 

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, along with guests will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11. NAJ was formed in 1984 among several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. The performance will feature works by Victor Feldman, Pat Matheny, John Moulder, Prince and Lauren Sevian.
