Tedricks make historic $6M donation, naming SIU Carbondale welcome center

With a $6 million donation, Roger and Sally Tedrick are leaving yet another indelible mark on the SIU Carbondale campus. In honor of their donation, a planned new building on campus will be named the Tedrick Welcome Center.


Sharp Museum dedicated in honor of $1M donation 

With a $1 million gift, Professor James Franklin Sharp has chiseled his name into SIU’s legacy. Now, the university has honored his generosity by renaming the University Museum as Sharp Museum.


SIU’s new Dewey Dialogues lecture series starts Tuesday 

The Dewey Dialogues, a new lecture series that focuses on the contemporary relevance of John Dewey’s philosophical and public work, kicks off at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, in Morris Library.


Reminder: Flu immunizations are available on campus Oct. 25, 31  

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS) will provide free flu immunizations for all active and retired SIU Carbondale employees, their dependents and surviving spouses enrolled in a state-sponsored health plan. Immunizations are Wednesday, Oct. 25, and Tuesday, Oct. 31, in the Student Center’s Renaissance Room.


Reminder: Conversation of Understanding is Tuesday 

A Conversation of Understanding on Tuesday, Oct. 24, will look at the SIU System’s response to the recent U.S. Supreme Court affirmative action ruling and focus on steps that can be taken to advance diversity and equity goals. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members are invited to join the live, virtual discussion at noon.


170 schoolchildren visiting SIU for tree walk on Tuesday 

About 170 area fourth-grade students from Carruthers Elementary School in Murphysboro will be on campus Tuesday, Oct. 24, for a tree walk and hands-on learning activities with SIU students, faculty and staff.


School of Art and Design to present visiting glass artist on Oct. 26 

Award-winning stained glass artist Judith Schaechter will present a lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26. The lecture is in Wham Education Building, Room 105. Part of the School of Art and Design’s Visiting Artist Program, the lecture is free and open to the public.


Reminder: University honors course proposal deadline is Oct. 30 

The University Honors Program is accepting course proposals from faculty for fall 2024 and spring 2025 UHON seminars.  Courses may be proposed in the faculty’s area of choice or along the theme for the year, which is “Play and Civilization: History, theory, practice.”


SIU sport administration student receives Vitello Award to help her break the glass ceiling

Jacqueline Crain, a junior in sport administration from Du Quoin, received the Elaine M. Vitello Ph.D. Leadership Award, named for a longtime SIU dean and educator who forged new pathways to success in the world of higher education.


SIU’s Export Controls newsletter is available  

The monthly SIU Export Controls newsletter for October 2023 is available. The newsletter provides a resource for current export control issues and events that could affect SIU and its faculty. This edition includes guidelines for international shipping and information on the foreign talents program. 


Reminder: Seats remain for leadership training workshops for staff 

Seats remain for free leadership training workshops — The Roles of a Leader — being offered in November by the Staff Advisory Committee for the SIU System. 


Popular SIU Buffalo Tro is Nov. 17

The Buffalo Tro, a popular longtime SIU Carbondale tradition, returns to Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center on Nov. 17, and tickets are available.
