Recyclemania events start on campus next week
The first event on campus for the RecycleMania 2018 Collegiate Recycling Tournament is Feb. 20, with a program aimed at reducing waste created due to disposable coffee cups.
The educational event about coffee and reusing mugs on campus will be in front of the escalators on the north end of the Student Center’s first floor. Participants can get their name entered in a raffle to win free eco-gifts. The tabling event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Sustainability Office has participated in the national RecycleMania contest for several years; the university’s goal is to increase recycling and reduce waste. SIU and other institutions of higher learning will report their recycling, composting and trash statistics for an eight-week period in February and March and then be ranked accordingly. The office is planning several events throughout the next seven weeks.
SIU Carbondale is one of only four universities and colleges in Illinois participating this year in the national contest.
