SIU offers free family fun swim program

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Chase away the winter blahs by enjoying a free swim at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Student Recreation Center, located at 300 E. Grand Ave.

Recreational Sports and Services is offering a “Family Fun Swim” once a month during the spring semester for anyone who would like to come in and enjoy some water time in Shea Natatorium, an Olympic-size indoor pool.

Free public swim sessions start Jan. 14

The inaugural session is on Jan. 14, in conjunction with the center’s Community Day Program, and sessions are also planned for Feb. 25, March 25 and April 29. On those dates, anyone can enjoy the water at no cost from 2 to 5 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity for families to come together and use one of the best aquatic centers in the area,” Troy Vaughn, director of Recreational Sports and Services, said. “We are hoping they come and have a great time in a very safe and accommodating environment.”

Lifeguards on duty

Trained and certified lifeguards will be present to assure a safe swim for all at the facility, which features an Olympic-size pool and diving.  Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times while swimming and while in the Student Recreation Center.

Participants should abide by the center’s entry and aquatic policies, and that includes wearing appropriate swimming apparel, which means rubber diapers for young children and swim trunks rather than cut-offs and jeans for all ages.
