Teaching Mathematics Conference set for Feb. 15

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Math teachers looking to update their teaching methods and network with others in the field should attend the 33rd annual Conference on Teaching Mathematics.

The conference is set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 15, 2018, at the Hancock Conference Center on the John A. Logan College campus in Carterville and Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Conference and Scheduling Services is now accepting reservations.

The popular annual event will provide pre-kindergarten through grade 14 teachers with the latest information various aspects of teaching math today, including the Standards for Mathematical Practice, which are key to teaching and preparing students for future Common Core assessments.

Learn new ways to teach math from the best in the field

Akihiko Takahashi, associate professor of elementary math teacher education at DePaul University, will present the keynote address: “A way to make a school a place for joyful learning for both students and teachers.” His presentation will explore a mathematics quality lesson study using the concepts of collaborative lesson research and teaching math through problem solving.

Guest speakers will also include Jackie Murawska, president of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics; George Reese, ICTM past president; other ICTM colleagues; and classroom teachers from throughout the state of Illinois. The conference will feature a variety of breakout sessions as well.

Register by Feb. 8 for a special rate

As space is limited, early registration is encouraged. Those who register by Feb. 8 pay $85; the cost is $10 more after that date. The fee covers all conference materials and sessions as well as a continental breakfast and luncheon.
