Stettler named vice chancellor for student affairs
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Lori Stettler was named Southern Illinois University Carbondale vice chancellor for student affairs by the SIU Board of Trustees on Dec. 14.
Stettler has led the university’s student affairs division on an interim basis since the position was re-established in July 2015. The initial recommendation to revive the position came from a task force that studied the efficiency and effectiveness of non-academic student services.
‘Long and successful tenure’ on interim basis
Chancellor Carlo Montemagno recommended Stettler’s appointment on a permanent basis to provide the units reporting to her greater stability and allow Stettler the opportunity to continue finding efficiencies in personnel and operations.
“Vice Chancellor Stettler has had a long and successful tenure in an interim capacity and continues to lead our student affairs areas effectively, always putting the welfare of our students first,” Montemagno said. “With over 30 years of experience in Student Affairs, she has spent her entire career in service to students on university campuses throughout the Midwest and here at SIU. I know she will continue to move our student affairs initiatives forward.”
Stettler said she is prepared to assume the responsibilities of the position on a permanent basis.
“I am excited to have earned this opportunity to continue to serve students and lead the Division of Student Affairs,” she said. “I am excited to continue that service through this new appointment.”
More than 11 years of exemplary service to SIU
Stettler has been with SIU since May 2006. Prior to her interim appointment in 2015, Stettler had been assistant vice chancellor for auxiliary services since 2011.
She has also served as director of the Student Center at SIU, director of campus life and director of recreational sports at Southeast Missouri State University, and in related student affairs positions at Purdue University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Wichita State University.
In addition, she taught courses in the departments of communications and health, human performance and recreation at Southeast Missouri State.
Numerous awards and honors
Stettler was SIU’s 2009 recreation alumnus of the year and received the 2005 Horace Moody Student Development Award from the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association.
She is member of several professional associations, including the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the National Association of Campus Auxiliary Services, and has presented widely on topics related to auxiliary service management, leadership and professional development.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in recreation administration from Southeast Missouri State and a master’s degree in recreation administration from SIU. She is nearing completion of her doctoral degree in educational administration and higher education from SIU.
