by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites the community into its creative space during its annual Open Studio, set for Oct. 13.

Faculty, students and guests may tour all of the studios or just a select few to get a sense of what goes on the studio space, foundry and other art production areas.

Here is the schedule:

  • 3 p.m. -- Foundry (1506 W. Pleasant Hill Road); sculpture, and the site for metal pours
  • 3:30 p.m. -- Pulliam Hall, Industrial wing for glass, metals and ceramics; Design wing for the SAM lab (Subtractive and Additive Maker)
  • 5 p.m. – Glove Factory (432 Washington Ave.) For painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture

The tour gives visitors a chance to meet graduate students and talk about their work, learn a little bit about some of the different kind of art made on campus, see work in progress and watch a few demonstrations.

The tour concludes at 6 p.m. with a cookout and faculty art show at the Glove Factory. Snacks and refreshments will be available throughout the tour. Bring a dish to share or something to grill if you want to join the cookout.
