SIU welcomes top students for scholarship interviews Feb. 3 and 4

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- More than 350 high-achieving high school students and their family members will be at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3 and 4, for the Chancellor’s and University Excellence Scholarship Interview Weekend.

Students will interview for the university’s top scholarships, tour campus, visit colleges, and learn about the University Honors program, student life and more. About 90 of the students will stay overnight in campus residence halls.

The students and families, together totaling more than 1,000 visitors to Carbondale and the campus, are coming from 17 states. All of the students have already been admitted to the university.

“Scholarship weekend gives top students the opportunity to get to know SIU and learn about the quality of our programs and support services as well as the friendliness of our campus and community,” Interim Chancellor Brad Colwell said. “It’s always rewarding to welcome future students and families and learn about their enthusiasm for SIU.”

Students unable to attend the weekend event interviewed for scholarships on an alternate date. Overall, 458 students were invited to the interview weekend based on their ACT scores, academic credentials and high school activities.

SIU will award 25 Chancellor’s Scholarships, which cover tuition, fees and room and board for four years, and a larger number of University Excellence Scholarships, which is an $8,500 award for four years.
