Donations of professional clothing sought for Career Closet

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Donating to Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Career closet is a win-win proposition.

It’s a chance to help SIU students launch their professional careers while breathing new life into quality professional attire, assuring good pieces are used rather than ending up in landfills. A special clothing collection drive began today (Jan. 23) and runs through Feb. 10 to benefit the Career Closet, located at the Multicultural Resource Center on the lower level of Grinnell Hall.

The drop-off locations and times for the clothing drive are as follows:

  • Student Multicultural Resource Center on the lower level of Grinnell Hall -- 1 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday
  • Area office in Lentz Hall -- 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • Member Services on the second floor of the Student Recreation Center -- 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • Innovation and Sustainability Hub on the main floor of the Student Center -- 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday

All types and sizes of professional clothing are welcome, including complete suits and outfits, as well as separate pieces. All donated items should be clean and in like-new condition so they can be given to students to wear for interviews and other professional activities.

The Career Closet operates throughout the academic year, accepting donations and in turn providing them to students. The hours are: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The purpose of the clothing drive is to assure that the closet is well-stocked and able to meet students’ needs during the spring 2017 semester.

The Career Closet is managed by the Student Multicultural Resource Center. For more information, call 618/453-3740 or 618/453-7993. The clothing drive is sponsored by the Student Multicultural Resource Center and the Sustainability Council.
