Wind Ensemble concert to feature music from the Jazz Age

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Wind Ensemble presents a December concert featuring music from the Jazz Age, the Roaring 20s.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 8 in Shryock Auditorium. Tickets are $12, with student tickets for $6. Tickets are available in advance from the Shryock Auditorium or McLeod Theater box offices or call 618/536-8742. Buy tickets at the door beginning an hour before the performance begins.

The 1920s music scene was characterized by energy. It was music that inspired movement but the old, traditional dances didn’t work with it. Ragtime and boogie-woogie were on the scene but when jazz gathered its mainstream audience, there was no holding it back.

The SIU Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Christopher Morehouse, associate professor and director of bands. The ensemble is open to SIU students capable of performing at an advanced level.
