Lync/Skype conversion to 0ffice 365 cloud starts Friday

Beginning at noon, on Friday, Aug. 5, all Lync/Skype for Business accounts will join email, SharePoint, and OneDrive in the Office 365 cloud. This change is part of the Office of Information Technology’s (OIT) continuing effort to reduce complexities in the system and to increase our ability to manage Lync/Skype for Business and the other Office 365 applications.

Several test groups have already been migrated successfully. When the actual move begins on Friday, users may experience service interruptions throughout the move through 6 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 7. However, most users in our test groups reported that the system disconnected and reconnected automatically and without notice. Users who reported slight hiccups resolved most issues by simply closing and reopening the program.

OIT believes that people who use the tool on a sporadic basis and/or are unaccustomed to its features will see no loss in service or in their ability to use it after the move. However, frequent users may notice a loss of some features. This loss seems particularly noticeable to people who use Lync/Skype for Business for phone service and conference calls.

Phone service disruption

VOIP phone numbers associated with Lync/Skype for Business accounts will be lost. Office 365 does not support VOIP at this point. Similarly, users will no longer be available for phone calls to landline/cell phones. Users will still be able to contact other Lync/Skype for Business-Skype users via video/voice call.

Conference call and virtual meeting elimination

After this move, the call-in conference feature in Lync/Skype for Business will no longer be available; SIU Carbondale no longer subscribes to this feature. To avoid missing meetings you may have scheduled, check your calendar for dates scheduled using this program -- the link to the virtual meeting room will not function after the move. You need to reschedule these meetings manually.
