College of Business earns reaccreditation

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The College of Business at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has again earned recognition that places it among the top five percent of the world’s business schools.

Both the college and its School of Accountancy learned on Friday, April 29, of reaccreditation from The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. AACSB is the oldest international accrediting body for business schools and less than five percent of the world’s more than 15,600 business programs earn accreditation. SIU has been AACSB-accredited since 1957 and the new reaccreditation is for a five-year period.

The accounting accreditation was developed for schools with advanced accounting programs and less than one percent of business schools worldwide achieve the dual business and accounting accreditations.

“We are gratified to again earn the accreditation that places us among the top business schools in the world, as it is affirmation of the quality of our students, faculty, staff, program and student services,” Jason Greene, interim dean of the College of Business, said. “But the relationships we have with our students is what that truly makes SIU’s College of Business special, setting us apart from other institutions. Our college and its alumni assist and mentor our students from Day 1, giving them the tools, knowledge, skills and connections they need to achieve and succeed as students and in the world of business. AACSB accreditation validates that our actions and mission have a major impact and are engaging and innovative.”

In order to earn the accreditation, AACSB requires that a business school show a commitment to continuous improvement, demonstrate success in the areas of engagement, innovation and impact, and continue to meet rigorous academic program standards.

The accreditation peer review team, composed of four accounting and business school leaders from across the country, reviewed the college’s continuous improvement report and visited campus Jan. 24-26. While at SIU, the team met with faculty, staff, students and alumni and observed the programs and facilities. The accreditation review assessed the college’s strategic management and innovation, learning and teaching, academic and professional engagement, and its students, faculty and staff.
