Academic, art camps planned for summer

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale will host dozens of academic and art camps and workshops this summer, giving children of all ages enriching, educational, enjoyable experiences. 

Here is an overview of the university’s Conference and Scheduling Services 2016 summer camps schedule, arranged by dates and including age ranges, prices, brief descriptions where available and other relevant information. Listings marked with (A) are all art camps or workshops and while the titles are descriptive of the camp content and themes, more complete descriptions of those camps will soon be available at www.conferenceservices.siu.edu/camps.

  • (A) Amazing Creatures Past and Present art camp, June 6-10, 9 a.m.-noon, grades 1-3, $115.
  • (A) Artists in Action art camp, June 6-10, 1-4 p.m., grades 4-8, $115.
  • Cooperative Youth Camp, June 9-10, overnight for privately sponsored students, grades 10-12. The conference gives campers a taste of college life as they study cooperatives and how they function. They will learn the seven cooperative principles and take a field trip to tour cooperative businesses.
  • Challenge to Excellence Camp I, June 12-17, grades 6-8, $350 for commuters or $400 for overnight. Academically talented students have the opportunity to stretch themselves by participating in interesting classes that promote higher levels of critical thinking and creativity.
  • Summer Wings Aviation Camp, June 12-17, grades 9-12, $1,765 for commuters or $1,940 for overnight campers. Participants will experience the thrill of flight and learn about aviation through the Department of Aviation Flight and Management.
  • Radio and TV News camp, June 12-17, overnight, grades 9-12, $95. Young women will learn broadcast writing, producing, videography, editing and field reporting skills.
  • (A) Intensive Drawing and Painting workshop, June 13-17, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., grades 6-9, $160.
  • (A) How Art and Architecture Inspire Drawing, Painting and Sculpting workshop, June 13-17, 2-5 p.m., grades 4-8, $115.
  • Challenge to Excellence Camp II, June 19-24, grades 9-11, $350 for commuters or $400 for overnight. Academically talented teens participate in a variety of classes that stretch their capabilities and promote higher critical-thinking skills and creativity.
  • Kid Architecture Camp, June 20-24, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. except on the final day when campers will take a field trip and return at 6:30 p.m., grades 4-6, $180.  Children participating in this camp learn about the world of design and architecture through projects, discussions and hands-on activities.
  • (A) Mini-Masters – Color workshop, June 20-24, 8:30-10:30 a.m., pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, $85.
  • (A) Draw, Stamp, Paint, Build workshop, June 20-24, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, $85.
  • (A) Inspired by Nature workshop, June 20-24, 2-5 p.m., grades 1-3, $115.
  • 17th annual Young Writers Workshop, June 22-25, grades 10-12, $350 for commuters attending 8:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. or $400 for overnight. Participants will explore and develop their poetry and prose writing talents with the help of published writers.
  • (A) Take Five: Exploring 2-D and 3-D Art workshop, June 27-July 1, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., grades 6-9, $160.
  • (A) Made in the Americas workshop, June 27-July 1, 2-5 p.m., grades 4-8, $115.
  • (A) Collaborative Design workshop, June 27-July 1, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., grades 10-12, $160.
  • Middle School Architecture Camp, July 10-15, grades 7-9, $370 for commuters (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. except on the final day when it lasts until 6:30 p.m.) or $520 for overnight. Participants will explore the build and design world through interesting activities and field trips as they form friendships.
  • (A) Exploring the Wild Kingdom workshop, July 11-15, 8:30-10:30 a.m., pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, $85.
  • (A) Telling Stories through Art workshop, July 11-15, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, $85.
  • (A) “When Mootise met Pigasso” and Inspiration from Other Artists We Love workshop, July 11-15, 2-5 p.m., grades 1-3, $115.
  • Mindfulness Camp, July 11-15, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., grades 9-12, $95. Participants will learn a variety of methods, including yoga and breathing techniques, to help them stay more focused, reduce anxiety and social fears, do better on school projects and increase their overall awareness.
  • High School Architecture Camp, July 17-22, grades 9-12, $370 for commuters (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except the last day when the camp concludes at 6:30 p.m.) or $520 for overnight campers. Campers will focus on design and architecture as they participate in discussions, hands-on activities, studio projects and field trips.
  • Involving Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Math (STEAM) camp, July 18-20, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., grades 6-8, $100. Participants will participate in hands-on experiments and activities and enjoy engaging demonstrations involving the STEAM areas as they explore the world around them. 
  • (A) Creative Studio workshop, July 18-22, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., grades 6-9, $160.
  • (A) High School Intensive Art workshop, July 18-22, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., grades 10-12, $190.
  • (A) Fun with Art Media workshop, July 25-29, 8:30-10:30 a.m., pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, $85.
  • (A) Mythical, Magical Creatures workshop, July 25-29, 1-4 p.m., grades 1-3, $115.
  • (A) Portraits, People and Places workshop, July 25-29, 9 a.m.-noon, grades 4-6, $115.
  • (A) Metal Sculpture 101 (SIU Studio) workshop, July 25-29, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., grades 7-12, $160.
  • (A) Art for Young Hands workshop, Aug. 1-5, 8:30-10:30 a.m., pre-kindergarten/kindergarten, $85.
  • (A) Explore Art workshop, Aug. 1-5, 9 a.m.-noon, grades 1-3, $115.
  • (A) Modern Masters Inspire workshop, Aug. 1-5, 1-4 p.m., grades 4-8, $115. 

In addition, SIU is hosting numerous LEGO camps with multiple sessions for each age group.  The LEGO camp schedule includes:

  • Beginning LEGO Engineering Camp, June 6-10, June 13-17, June 20-24, June 27-July 1, July 11-15, July 18-22, each session is half-day, grades 1-2, $99. Children will create stationary and motorized projects including a helicopter and motorized player piano using LEGOs, pulleys, gears, and other assorted items. They will have a take-home project as well.
  • Advanced Engineering LEGO Camp, June 6-10, June 13-17, June 20-24, June 27-July 1, July 11-15, July 18-Aug. 15, each session is half-day, grades 3-5, $99. Campers will participate in a variety of hands-on activities using LEGOs, motors and other components as they create a motorized dragster, disk speedster and various other items, including a project to take home.
  • WeDo Robotics LEGO Camp, June 20-24, June 27-July 1, noon-4:30 p.m., grades 3-5, $99. Using LEGO Education WeDo hardware and software, children will create wild animal theme models and hone their critical thinking skills.
  • LEGO MindStorms Camp, morning and afternoon camp sessions are offered June 6-10, June 13-17, July 11-15 and July 18-22 along with morning session June 20-24 and June 27-July 1, ages 10 and older, $150. Participants will create and command robots that walk, talk, “think,” and perform all kinds of tasks using LEGO MindStorms EV3 technology and then take on challenging robotic missions by remote control or through a free smartphone robot command app.
