Google Apps domain reminder

The Office of Information Technology is reminding faculty, staff and students who still use their university email address “@siu.edu” to access Google services, that access to the Google Apps domain will close May 17.

During the past year, all university Google email accounts were migrated from Google Apps to Microsoft Office 365. Users on campus who have made the transition are not affected. However, users who are continuing to use “@siu.edu” to access either Google Services including YouTube, Picasa, Voice, Wallet, and Play Store, need to migrate their files or change their settings for these services. Any data stored on Google Drive (Google Docs) should be migrated to another location, such as OneDrive on Microsoft 365 or to a storage device. Any data accessed using Google Apps or stored on Google Drive, for example, general data, a thesis or book, or pictures and music, will no longer be available after May 17.

There are several simple fixes, but a recommendation is to take action now before the deadline. Migrating to Office 365 and storing information on OneDrive is still the preferred option. However, Google lovers can create or use an existing personal Google account and relocate stored data there. Downloading stored information to an external hard drive is a great method to save information and creates a backup for duplicate material stored in the cloud.

Tutorials to help download your Google data and optionally upload it to your SIU OneDrive are here. SIU Carbondale OneDrive users have one terabyte (1000 GB) of storage, or more than 30 times that provided by Google Drive.

More information on Google Apps accounts and a link to reset your Google Apps password is here.
