Society will honor Chugh for work in solid fuels
CARBONDALE, Ill. – A faculty member in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s College of Engineering next year will receive an award for his work in solid fuels.
Yoginder “Paul” Chugh, professor of mining and mineral resources engineering, will receive the 2015 Percy Nicholls Award from the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration during its annual meeting in Phoenix in February.
Established in 1942, the award honors researchers for notable scientific or industrial achievement in the field of solid fuels. The award is funded in alternating years by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Chugh will receive a certificate in his name inscribed with the name of the award and the citation of the particular achievement for which the award is being conferred. Only members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration or the American Society of Mechanical Engineers are eligible to receive the award.
Chugh is being honored for his record as an engineer “with exceptional depth and breadth of knowledge on all aspects of mining engineering, particularly coal mining and utilization of coal,” according to the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration. “In a career spanning over 50 years, as an educator and consultant, he has made significant contributions to the science and art of mining to enhance the health, safety, productivity and environmental aspects of the industry.”
Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration officials made particular note of Chugh’s many contributions to the utilization and safe disposal of coal combustion products to advance sustainable coal industry practices.
