SIU to mark National Adult Student Recognition Week

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale continues its long-standing reputation for being supportive of non-traditional students with a celebration of National Adult Student Recognition Week, Oct. 31-Nov. 7.

Non-Traditional Student Services and Veteran Services are teaming up with 13 campus units and community organizations to sponsor a variety of events. SIU currently has more than 5,600 non-traditional undergraduate and graduate students studying on-campus, online or at one of the 20 off-campus locations in 13 states. In planning the events, organizers were mindful of the diversity of the adult student population and the goal of providing student engagement opportunities in the areas of community service, professional development, parenting and cultural awareness.

It all kicks off on Halloween Day as the Salukis celebrate Military Appreciation Day with a pre-game tailgate and special military recognition at the 2 p.m. football game. Game admission is free for all active-duty and military veterans. There will be “Trunk or Treat” family fun in the tailgate area from noon to 1:30 p.m. that day with treats for the kids and prizes for best costumes.

Several virtual events are planned to assure students can participate, no matter where they live. Submit photos of your favorite vehicle by email to join in an online Virtual Commuter Car Show and win a prize package if yours gets the most votes. The inaugural virtual lunch and learn at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 3, will offer “Technology and Time-Saving Strategies,” tips for using the campus Office 365 calendar system and online web apps to help you better manage time and multiple responsibilities.

There are community activities as well, including participation in a Keep Carbondale Beautiful Cleanup from 9 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1. It begins at the Town Square Pavilion.

The week also includes appreciation activities, learning events, an international coffee hour, an etiquette dinner, breakfast-on-the-go and more. It all wraps up with the Southern Illinois Community Stand Up for Vets, a regional event at Evergreen Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 7 to support and benefit Southern Illinois veterans. Toiletry items will be collected for veterans in need.
