Saluki Family Weekend set for Sept. 25-27
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale students and their families will have many opportunities to create great memories during Saluki Family Weekend 2015, set for Sept. 25-27.
Participants can enjoy the Saluki Family Weekend Craft Sale, join in the fifth annual Saluki Kickoff 5K Run or tour campus. You can also be wowed by the talented students participating in the 80th annual Greek Sing or play Saluki Bingo. The festivities also include the Family Weekend Brunch, free Saluki Family Housing and Alumni Association tailgate action and of course, Saluki football as the gridiron squad takes on Liberty University in the fifth annual Blackout Cancer Game. This game is a time to celebrate cancer survivors, honor those who have succumbed to the disease and raise funds to eradicate cancer through online bidding on Saluki game jerseys.
Take the whole family to see the movie “Despicable Me,” aired all weekend long with a free showing on Friday night at Saluki Stadium. The Student Center Craft Shop is offering a variety of walk-in craft activities and the families can join students for a tour and use of the Student Recreation Center facilities. Other campus facilities are offering special discounts, activities, sales and promotions as well.
The University Museum, located in Faner Hall, is featuring several free exhibits including Ben Gelman’s photographs of the last days of steam engines in Carbondale and an exhibit telling the story of area flatboats and steam ships in addition to photos from SIU alumnus Barry Wolf. Visitors can also view furniture by Makanda woodworker and cabinet maker Kyle Kinzer in conjunction with artisans L. Brent Kington, Michael Onken and Aldon Addington and other displays, too.
