Volunteers needed for student move-in
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The fall semester will soon begin at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and once again, volunteers will play a critical role in welcoming thousands of students to Carbondale and helping them move into on-campus residences.
It takes many people from across campus and the community to help make the move-in process successful, according to Jon L. Shaffer, director of University Housing. While some have already pledged their help, additional SIU faculty and staff and local organization volunteers are needed as well. More than 1,000 new students will move in on Thursday, Aug. 20, with an additional 1,000 new students moving in the following day. Approximately 1,200 returning students will move in on Aug. 22. Volunteers can chose their preference as to what days, hours and locations they would prefer to work.
During the move-in, University Housing will provide free welcome lunches to all residents and accompanying families as well as to volunteers who help with the move-in. Volunteers will receive a complimentary meal ticket when they check in on site.
To assure adequate seating for student residents and their families, only they and registered volunteers will receive the complimentary lunches. Other people who are on campus may dine at the residence hall dining facilities by purchasing guest meal tickets, available at the dining hall entrance, for $9.25 each, plus tax.
