CARBONDALE, Ill. – Successful graduate students value the opportunity to teach and mentor as they pursue their own studies. The College of Liberal Arts at Southern Illinois University Carbondale initiated two new teaching awards in recognition of the dedication to teaching exhibited by top graduate students.

Derrick Langston, a graduate student from Blue Island majoring in communication studies, and Jaclyn Grogan, a master of fine arts in theater student from Evansville, Ind., are the inaugural recipients of the College of Liberal Arts Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award.

To be considered for the award, graduate teaching assistants include a statement of teaching philosophy and a statement of teaching practice, as well as teaching evaluations, and letters of support from at least one faculty mentor or adviser.

The award includes recognition from the college in the form of a certificate and a $250 cash award.
