Dawgs Nite Out helps kick off fall semester

by Joaquin Norman

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Dawgs Nite Out 2013, set for Saturday, Aug. 17, will help kick off Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s fall semester.

Open to all current SIU Carbondale students with a valid University ID, Dawgs Nite Out is from 7:30 p.m. to midnight at the Student Center.

Activities include cosmic bowling at Bowling and Billiards, laser tag and casino games in the ballrooms, caricatures and making your own street signs in the International Lounges, henna tattoos and Wax Hands from the Craft Shop, and much more. The Las Vegas-style evening will feature casino games, bingo, photo poker chips, and opportunities to make your own music video.

This year there is a new addition to the lineup -- the Saluki T-shirt Swap.  The first 300 students to bring their old college/high school T-shirts, in good condition, to the Student Alumni Council table will receive a new, collectible, Saluki T-shirt. The trade-in shirts will go to charity.

Live band karaoke begins at 9 p.m. in the Roman Room.  The Student Programming Council will present the semester’s first movie, “Fast and Furious 6,” at 9:30 p.m., in the Auditorium.

The traditional event is a way to bring students together for a night of fun and relaxation before the academic rigors of the semester, which opens Aug. 19. There will also be a free late-night pancake breakfast featuring sausage, biscuits and gravy.

In addition, many of the Student Center’s businesses and restaurants will offer discount pricing and specials throughout the evening.

Dawgs Nite Out sponsors include the Student Programming Council, New Student Programs and the Student Center.
