GPSC offers summer research/travel awards

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale graduate and professional students may now apply for new summer research and travel awards from the University’s Graduate and Professional Student Council.

The program is open to all graduate and professional continuing students enrolled for the fall 2012 semester and proposals are due by May 30.  This summer, the council will provide 26 merit-based awards for projects students will complete by Aug. 15, 2012.  Included are eight awards at $500 each and 18 awards of $250.

Applicants must provide a 500-1,500 word statement of purpose, an expense statement, a letter of recommendation with emphasis on expense merit, and third-party documentation including items such as itinerary copies, conference confirmation, documented materials and travel costs and so forth.  Submit completed applications by May 30 to gpsc@siu.edu with “GPSC Summer Research/Travel Award” in the subject line.  You may have those providing your recommendation letters send them separately but they should include the same subject line in the email along with the name of the person the recommendation is for.

The vetting process will take place June 1-14 with announcement of awards on June 15 and funds distributed before June 30.  Those who are members of GPSC as of May 30, 2012, and members of the vetting committee, as well as family members, are ineligible for the GPSC Summer Research/Travel Awards.
