Webinars on copyright available to faculty

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Center for Teaching Excellence, in coordination with the Office of Distance Education and Off Campus Programs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is offering a two-session webinar for faculty focused on copyrights.

The “brown bag lunch” seminars run from noon to 1:30 p.m. both days.  The first session is March 2 and will be in the Mississippi Room of the Student Center.  The second is March 21, and will be in the Ohio Room of the Student Center.  The events are free.

The March 2 session, “Faculty Use of Copyright,” covers use of copyrighted materials in the classroom, including online classrooms.  Other topics include: fair use of copyrighted material in research; using films and other copyrighted audio-visual materials, particularly in the online classroom; and the pros and cons of using social media sites in teaching.

The March 21 session, “Faculty Ownership of Copyright,” will help faculty members protect their own works and publications by helping them examine how copyright laws apply to them.  Topics include basic principles of copyright ownership, including information about copyright protection and management; licensing requirements; open content requirements; and publication agreements.

Pre-registration is encouraged.  Contact Julie Eisenhauer at juliee@siu.edu
