Safety Alert

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Public Safety is investigating an aggravated battery/attempted robbery that occurred at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, in the Base Camp area on the west side of the Student Recreation Center.

Two male victims, one an SIUC student, told police that two suspects approached them from the rear and punched the victims several times in the back.  The suspects then attempted to grab the victims’ wallets from their back pockets, but were unsuccessful.  The victims escaped unhurt.

The two suspects were part of a group of six individuals, although the other four did not participate in the attack.  The victims described the suspects as slim black males, both 5 feet, 10 inches tall.  One of the suspects was wearing a blue plaid jacket; the other was wearing a blue Nike windbreaker and a hat.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the SIUC Department of Public Safety at 618/453-3771 or the Crime Stopper Line at 618/549-COPS.

Police advise members of the campus community to be aware of their surroundings at all times, and if traveling at night to use the Saluki Express, Night Safety Transit Service and Brightway Path.  In addition, emergency call phones are located across campus, including on both overpasses.
