SIUC to host 'British Soccer Camp' this summer

by Nicole Trainor

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- As the number of soccer players in the USA nears 20 million, Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Division of Continuing Education is collaborating with Challenger Sports, a leading soccer company in the United States and Canada, to have a “British Soccer Camp” during the 2011 summer camp season.

Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp focuses on a framework of character development based on respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship. Players ages 6-16 will receive instruction in key techniques and technical components of soccer and will also learn about the geography, traditions and culture of countries where soccer is traditionally popular.

This year’s camp will be June 13-17 at Stehr Field on the SIUC campus. The camp will meet 9 a.m. to noon for players ages 6-10, while players ages 11-16 will participate from 1 to 4 p.m.

The camp fee is $135 for registrations received by June 3. There will be a $10 late fee for those registering after the June 3 early registration deadline. Registration fees cover instruction, a camp T-shirt, a soccer ball, a large soccer poster and a skills performance evaluation.
