Old Main Restaurant to host Sushi Day

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Old Main Restaurant in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Student Center is hosting Sushi Day on April 5.

The event will feature an all-you-can-eat meal with hand-rolled sushi and other Asian cuisine from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Watch as the delicacy is made and then taste. The buffet will offer various other Asian dishes that day as well and the price is $7.29.

Open to the public, the buffet is a popular annual event that typically draws a large crowd. Walk-ins are welcome but space is limited so organizers suggest making advance reservations by calling 618/453-5277. Diners can also order from the grill menu or enjoy the soup and salad bar.

The Student Center’s Craft Shop is offering you the chance to learn how to make sushi for yourself, too. The shop is hosting two workshops offering the “how-tos” of cooking the vinegared rice and rolling the nori. You can sample what you prepare as well.

Workshops are set for 5:30-7:30 p.m. on April 8 and April 26. You must sign up in advance. The cost is $10 for SIUC students or $12 for non-students. Community members are welcome. Participants must be at least 12 years old.

For more information, or to register, visit the Craft Shop on the lower level of the Student Center or call 618/453-3636. The shop accepts payment by major credit card, checks, Debit Dawg or cash. You can also visit the Web site at www.siucstudentcenter.org or send an email to craftshp@siu.edu to learn more.
