Media Advisory -- Metal Pour

Students and faculty in the metalsmithing program in the Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Art and Design invite reporters, photographers and film crews to the annual metal pour at the foundry complex. The pour is set for Saturday, Sept. 25. Set-up begins at 9 a.m., with the pour itself likely to start around 1 p.m.

The process involves melting iron in the furnace cupola by heating it to 2,360 degrees Fahrenheit, then using a two-person ladle to pour the molten iron into sand molds and ceramic shell molds.

The foundry is at 1560 W. Pleasant Hill Road in Carbondale, across from Evergreen Terrace Apartments.
