Applications due for Homecoming festivities

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale is accepting applications for next month’s Homecoming celebration.

Homecoming is set for Oct. 9, and the theme is “Saluki Shore.”

There is a new route for the annual parade, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of South Illinois Avenue and Mill Street, just west of the Mill Street railroad overpass. Parade participants will line up between 8 and 9 a.m. in the area just east of the parade starting point and north of the Student Recreation Center.

Marching units, car/truck units, equestrian units, small floats and large floats are welcome to participate in the parade. To guarantee a spot, you must submit an entry form to the Student Programming Council Office on the third floor of the Student Center by 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 6. You can also e-mail the applications to homecoming@spc4fun.com or fax them to 618/453-6559.

Junior high and high school bands are also welcome to join in the fun although their application deadline is Sept. 24. The application forms for bands and for all other parade entries as well as applications for students who want to be part of the Homecoming court are online at www.spc4fun.com. Court applications are due by 4 p.m. Sept. 24.

The new parade route takes participants two blocks north on South Illinois Avenue from the starting point and then left onto College Street. It proceeds west for two blocks to South University Avenue then south on University Avenue past the Mill Street intersection, through the merge onto the two-way traffic section of South Illinois Avenue until turning right and going west on Lincoln Drive. It all wraps up at the Student Center.

SIUC takes on the University of Northern Iowa Panthers in gridiron action at 2 p.m. Oct. 9.
