Media Advisory -- ‘A Weekend in Murphysboro’

Reporters, photographers and camera crews are welcome to accompany Southern Illinois University Carbondale students this weekend while they chronicle people and happenings in Murphysboro.

Approximately 35 students from the School of Journalism and other departments within the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts will begin their work at sunrise, Friday, Oct. 2.

The pilot project, which ends at sunset, Sunday, Oct. 4, brings together students with about 20 of the nation’s leading editors and practitioners. Students will use digital still photography, sound and video to document the city over the three-day period. Computer stations to edit and download audio and video, and build multi-media projects and packages, will be in the Davis-McCann Building, located on North 14th Street, one-half block north of Walnut Street.

The three-day effort will result in a gallery-quality exhibit of the students’ work, an interactive Web site, an online documentary detailing the project, and possibly a coffee table book. An evening presentation on Saturday, Oct. 3, for the community will feature some of the best images collected to that point. The presentation will begin at about 8 p.m. at the Davis-McCann Building.

Media members can accompany students on their assignments. You may reach Assistant Professor Mark J. Dolan prior to the workshop at 618/453-3227 or via email at markjdolan@mac.com. During the workshop, you may reach Dolan at 315/882-2446.
