Cinema and Photography students win awards

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Twenty outstanding students in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Department of Cinema and Photography recently earned scholarships and received awards for the 2008-2009 academic year.

The department’s honors day ceremony was April 5. The department is within the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts.

Here is a list of scholarship winners, by hometown. Where available, the listing contains the winner’s name, year in school, major, scholarship name, the amount, and a bit of background on the award.

Illinois

Belleville: Damon J. Taylor, senior, cinema. John C. Mercer Scholarship Award, $75. The award goes to outstanding cinema production students for their work in the past year, and honors the professor and founder of the University’s cinema program. Taylor is the son of Karen Sue Taylor-Reiman.

Carbondale: Cyrus Farhang, junior, cinema. Loren Cocking Animation Award, $100. Established in honor of Loren Cocking, who taught film production and animation courses at the University from 1976 through 2002, the award goes to an outstanding student filmmaker for accomplishment in animation the past year. Farhang is the son of Sandra Ross and Kambiz Fahrang.

Carbondale: Lauren A. Stoelzle, senior, photography. Mary Greene Memorial Award, $100. The award honors Mary Greene, a department alumna, and goes to an undergraduate student for outstanding accomplishment in photography. She is the daughter of Lucretia Stoelzle and stepdaughter of Tamara Stoelzle.

Stoelzle also earned a certificate of award for her honorable mention in the University Single Image category in the 2009 PIEA International Student-Teacher Photo Competition and Exhibition. The competition featured 6,080 images by 1,334 entrants from 114 schools in 10 countries.

Chicago: Rose H. Berkman, senior, cinema. John C. Mercer Scholarship Award, $75. She is the daughter of Jeanne Robinson and Lou Berkman.

East St. Louis: De’Angelo N. Williams, junior, cinema. Minority Filmmaker Award, $500. Established in 1995 by SIUC cinema and photography graduate and 1994 Academy Award nominee Steve James, the award goes to help subsidize production costs for a minority student filmmaker whose work in the past year shows significant promise. He is the son of Regina and De’Angelo Williams, Sr.

Effingham: Dylan J. Murphy, junior, photography. Paul Harum Memorial Award, $100. Established in honor of Paul Harum, who was a photography student at SIUC. The award goes to an undergraduate student for outstanding accomplishment in the past year. He is the son of Susan and Jeff Murphy.

Elmhurst: Alexa R. Nutile, junior, cinema. Photography Outstanding Scholar Award, $100. Established to promote scholarly studies in area of photography history, theory and criticism. For the first time, a cinema student receives the award for her outstanding work in photography history. She is the daughter of Christine and Charles Nutile.

Farmer City: Bridget A. Ryan, senior, photography. Photography Production Award, $100. The award goes to an outstanding undergraduate student for outstanding accomplishment in photography in the past year. She is the daughter of Susan and Patrick Ryan.

Highland: William A. Komeshak, senior, cinema. Cinema Production Award, $100. Presented to a cinema student for their outstanding accomplishment in film production classes in the past year. He is the son of Dennis and Terri Komeshak.

Komeshak also earned the FotoKem Student Filmmaker Fall 2008 Award. The recipient receives film processing, print dailies and answer printing for up to 10,000 feet of 16mm film or 20,000 feet of 35 mm film.

Marion: Matthew S. Jones, senior, cinema. Outstanding Scholar Award in Cinema, $100. The award goes to a cinema student for outstanding scholarly accomplishment in the past year. He is the son of Malcolm and Kathryn Jones.

Mount Olive: Rose Odorizzi, senior, photography. David Gilmore Award, $250. The award goes to an outstanding photography student in the past year, and honors David Gilmore, who taught in the department for 31 years. She is the daughter of Mark and JoAnn Odorizzi.

Naperville: Linden A. DeGurian, junior, cinema. Robert Dennis Filmmaker Award, $250. Established by SIUC Department of Cinema and Photography alumnus Robert Dennis, currently president of the Large Format Cinema Association and director of sales and marketing at CFI, a major film lab in Hollywood. The award goes to an outstanding student filmmaker for accomplishment in cinematography in the past year. He is the son of Linda and Alex DeGurian.

Roscoe: Danielle N. Williamson, junior in cinema. John C. Mercer Scholarship Award, $75. She is the daughter of Mary and Wayne Williamson.

Washington: Jaclyn R. Wright, senior, photography. Charles Swedlund Award, $250. Established in honor of former professor Charles Swedlund, who taught at SIUC for 29 years. The award goes to an outstanding photography student. She is the daughter of David and Kathy Wright.

Wright also earned an honorable mention certificate in the University Single Image category in the PIEA International Student-Teacher Photo Competition and Exhibition.

Wauconda: Madelyn M. Kime, junior, photography. C. William Horrell Memorial Award, $100. The award honors C. William Horrell, long-time faculty member and photography program founder. Presented to an outstanding undergraduate student for accomplishment in documentary photography and/or photojournalism in the past year. She is the daughter of Joan Miceli of Wauconda and Jeffrey Kime of Valparaiso, Ind.

Missouri

Florissant: Jonathan D. Helms, senior, cinema. Robert Dennis Filmmaker Award, $500. He is the son of Ron Helms of Florissant, Mo., and Suzette Helms of Symsonia, Ky.

Hawaii

Aiea: Josh E. Denmark, senior, photography. Kodak Professional Imaging Award, $1,000. Presented to an outstanding undergraduate student based on academic and professional excellence in the past year.

Colombia

Medellin: Pablo Tonbon-Gallo, sophomore, cinema. Liz Ralston Filmmaker Award, $500. Established by SIUC cinema alumnus Liz Ralston, the award goes to an outstanding student filmmaker for innovation accomplishment in the past year. He is the husband of Paula Echeverri and father of Tamara Venegas, also of Medellin.

Kuwait

Salwa: Abdul-Aziz Mohammad, senior, cinema. Pablo Tonbon-Gallo, sophomore, cinema. Liz Ralston Filmmaker Award, $250.

Japan

Toyoma: Eriko Ami, senior, cinema. FotoKem Student Filmmaker Spring 2009 Award.
