Kids can create murals in free museum program

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Area children ages 7-14 are invited guests for “Kitchen Sink Mural,” the next Completely Free Saturday program offered by Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s University Museum.

The program is 1:30-3:30 on March 21 at the museum. The program is, as the name implies, free, but pre-registration is a requirement. Call 618/453-5388 to register. If an insufficient number of participants pre-register, the program will be cancelled.

Completely Free programs use a combination of art appreciation and creation to make museum exhibits come alive for children. This time, participants begin by examining murals by Works Progress Administration (WPA) artist Karl Kelpe. From there, participants go on to produce murals of their own to tell stories much as Kelpe did.
