SIUC Jazz Festival 2009 set for Saturday, Feb. 21

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Big Band and musical combos from area high schools and junior high schools come to Southern Illinois University Carbondale on Saturday, Feb. 21, to learn and maybe compete a little while they do it.

This year, participants include Carbondale Community High School, Sesser-Valier High School, Murphysboro High School, and University City High School from St. Louis, Mo. Participating junior high schools include Murphysboro Middle School, Marion Junior High School and Harrisburg Middle School.

The SIUC Jazz Festival 2009 culminates in a 4 p.m. concert featuring New Arts Jazztet, an SIUC faculty jazz ensemble, and the SIUC Studio Jazz Orchestra. The Studio Jazz Orchestra is the top of the student jazz ensembles at SIUC. Lecturer Timothy Pitchford is the director.

The students participating in this festival have the chance to meet other student musicians from the quad-state area, and to receive private coaching from jazz educators while on campus. Participants also compete for awards as they learn.

The concert is free and open to the public.
