School of Music plans free concerts next week

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A pair of free concerts from Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s School of Music will liven up mid-week on campus.

A tuba and euphonium studio recital begins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the Old Baptist Foundation, coordinated by Andrew Tucker, who also directs the Marching Salukis. Studio recitals give music students a chance to perform music for an audience in an informal environment.

The SIUC Jazz Combos take over the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19. The Jazz Combos are improvisation laboratories, where musicians learn to work with and off each other as they learn to use various jazz styles to achieve one of the higher goals of jazz musicianship -- improvisation for an audience. Philip Brown, associate professor and New Arts Jazztet member, coordinates the Jazz Combos.
