Student wins honorable mention in art contest

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale art student Esteban del Valle, from Chicago, recently won honorable mention for his drawing, "Self-Reflection 13" at the 2007 Annual Collegiate Artists Competition.

Del Valle, a student in the SIUC School of Art and Design in the College of Liberal Arts, was one of 279 art students in Illinois to submit artwork for the competition. He was one of 50 finalists selected to enter the juried competition. The juror was David Russick, gallery director for the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis.

SIUC student Julia Rogers, of Dublin, Ohio, was also a finalist and exhibitor in the competition. She entered a ceramic piece called, "Sherrie."

Del Valle's and Rogers' work are on display with other finalists' creations at Oakton Community College's Koehnline Museum of Art in Des Plaines. Awards day was May 5. Gov. Rod Blagojevich awarded the Governor's Medallion of Excellence to Hsuan-Hsiu Hung, a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the overall winner of the event. Blagojevich joined the Illinois Board of Higher Education, Illinois Community College Board, and the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities as sponsors of the event.
