by Chase Goble

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Challenge to Excellence this summer celebrates its 24th anniversary at Southern Illinois University Carbondale as one of the most respected summer residential programs in the Midwest for academically talented students.

The program's goal is to promote higher level thinking skills in a variety of academic subjects. Sessions will be taught by instructors who have years of experience teaching gifted students. Counselors who are experienced teachers or SIUC graduate students supervise the sessions.

The first session, June 17-22, is for students entering seventh and eighth grade and the second session, June 25-30, is for those entering ninth, 10th and 11th grades. Admission is granted on a competitive basis and is highly selective.

Resident fees are $320 before May 25 and $330 after. Tuition includes room, meals, most instructional supplies and a T-shirt. The commuter fee is $250 before May 25 and $260 after and includes the same items except overnight accommodations.
