Everyone welcome in the 'Big Tent' at Homecoming

by Greg Scott

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Alumni Association is inviting alumni, students, friends and families of the University to enjoy a complimentary meal and entertainment prior to the SIUC Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The SIU Alumni Association and SIUC's colleges are co-hosting the 23rd annual pre-game Homecoming celebration in the Alumni "Big Tent," east of McAndrew Stadium on the SIUC campus. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The event, sponsored by Egyptian Electric Cooperative, A Touchstone Energy Cooperative, begins at 11 a.m., following the annual Homecoming parade in downtown Carbondale. Kickoff for Southern's football game against Western Illinois University is set for 1:30 p.m.

Guests under the Alumni "Big Tent" will enjoy music, complimentary lunch and beverages, and giveaways. University dignitaries and guests will be in attendance.

"This event is a Southern tradition that has been embraced by the University and Southern Illinois region. We encourage all Saluki fans to attend this event and show their support of the University and the football team," said Tuesday Ashner, the Alumni Association's director of SIU campus programs. "That is what makes Homecoming a special occasion."

Ashner expects a large turnout for the extravaganza this year. She says up to 4,000 guests have gathered under the "Big" Tent in years past.

The event is made possible by SIU Alumni Association membership dues. Membership information will be available at the celebration. Annual membership is $40 and life membership is $500, with installment plans available. Students can join the organization for a $15 annual fee. Alumni, students, and friends of the University are eligible to join the SIU Alumni Association.
