Golf scramble will honor the late James E. Walker

by Sue Davis

CARBONDALE, ILL. -- Southern Illinois University President Glenn Poshard will host the University's annual golf scramble Friday, May 19, at Stone Creek Golf Club in Makanda. The event raises money for SIU Carbondale's prestigious Presidential Scholarships.

"This is an enjoyable day because golfers get to meet some of the scholarship winners each year before we begin play," Poshard said.

This year the event honors the life and achievements of the late SIU President James E. Walker. Golfers are encouraged to register now for this year's event. Non-golfers can also make contributions. Walker created the Presidential Scholarship program and more than 95 of Illinois' best and brightest students have benefited from the awards to date. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees and housing.

Individual ($100) and team entries of six ($600) may be made by phoning Bryan Vagner at the SIU Foundation at 618/453-4913. A variety of corporate and event sponsorships are also available, beginning with hole sponsorships at $100. Underwriters for the event are 710 Bookstore and University Bookstore.

The scramble features a lunch that begins at 11 a.m. and the shotgun start follows at 12:30 p.m. Registration is limited to the first 144 golfers.
